Janoš Butinar first wished to become a veterinary doctor when he was five years old. His wish came true, and Prof. Butinar spent 25 years of his fruitful career as a veterinarian at the Veterinary Faculty in Ljubljana, Slovenia, where he was promoted to a Full Professor in 2008. Prof. Butinar completed his residency with the European College of Veterinary Surgeons in Great Britain (Queen Mother Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Cambridge) with Prof. White and at the Veterinary Faculty in Utrecht with Prof. Van Sluijs and Prof. Kirpensteijn. His specific interests lie in surgical oncology and reconstructive surgery. He obtained additional training in abdominal surgery with world-renowned surgeon Prof. Eldarju M. Gadžijev.
Prof. Butinar is an active member of the European Society of Veterinary Oncology. Most of his non-clinical time is devoted to the study of tumour biology and clinical research with the aim of providing better diagnostic and treatment options to veterinary oncology patients.
Prof. Butinar is the founder of the Animal Hospital Postojna and professional leader of the hospital's growing team. His great wish is to make it possible, with his own knowledge and the knowledge of his expert friends worldwide, for his young colleagues to develop professionally and become experts dedicated to the care of animals and clients.
An old American definition of a surgeon, which is particularly true for an oncology surgeon, says: a good surgeon knows how to operate, a better surgeon knows when to operate, but the best surgeon knows, when not to operate. Prof. Butinar strives to achieve the last principle.
